Gearing up
Filed Under Erin Weed's Blog | Leave a Comment
So tomorrow I leave for Denver to begin my first-ever national college book tour! Needless to say I’ve been running around like a crazy woman getting everything in order before I pretty much disappear from New Jersey for awhile. But honestly, this couldn’t be more exciting. In just the past week, several colleges have “gotten on the bus” and it’s looking more and more like I’ll hit my goal of touring 20 college campuses during Sept/Oct.
Tomorrow I will send out the September e-news where I’ll be dishing some more behind-the-scene action, so if you haven’t subscribed already, click here.
And get this…we sent out the press release announcing the tour this morning, and it was picked up by Yahoo news! Click here to read it.

I’m happy to announce that the official sponsor of my book tour, which starts on September 2nd, is the funky hair product company BED HEAD. All the campuses on my book tour will be getting cool t-shirts and books from me…and fab hair samples from Bed Head. Get psyched for this tour…it’s going to be a raging success….

Oxygen

Today I spoke to the employees at Oxygen Media in New York City. What a great crowd, including a few guys! My scary bad guy was a repeat, since he was the guy I was provided on my last visit. Thanks Anthony! As many of you know, anytime I go to Oxygen I always take a pic with my fave celeb, Ellen DeGeneres. I wouldn’t want to disappoint, so here you go. Holla!

Stevens Institute RA’s
Filed Under Erin Weed's Blog | Leave a Comment
Yesterday the Stevens Institute of Technology Resident Assistants (RA’s) came to my studio to learn how to open up a can o’ whoop-ass. Well first we talked about the best way to handle situations where a resident may confide in them that they had been assaulted. Those first moments where a victim shares their story is so critical..it must be handled sensitively, and they need to get the necessary help ASAP. After that we learned some palm strikes and knees to teh groin. The group was about half guys and half girls, but everybody was kung fu fighting…come back again soon!
Here are the RA’s, probably laughing at me as I do “The Deer.”

Palm Strike Professionals! Look at ‘em go!

Meet Shawn Decker

I’ve blogged about Shawn Decker before, but now he’s even cooler…because he’s a published author! Shawn was diagnosed with HIV at age 11 as a result of a tainted blood infusion. He and his wife Gwenn travel the nation as educators about healthy relationships and safe sex. Shawn is also a certified hemophiliac, and the inspiration behind a program that I’m developing called “Thinbloods Fight Back!” (Self defense for hemos…a very tricky subject.) His first book titled “My Pet Virus” hits bookstores in September, and he and Gwenn are on the cover of POZ magazine this month. (POZ is an awesome mag for people living with HIV and AIDS) Read an exerpt from Shawn’s book by clicking here. Even better, buy the book! You won’t be disappointed.

College Police Conference
Filed Under Erin Weed's Blog | Leave a Comment
All day today and yesterday I’ve been at the College and University Police and Investigators Conference held at George Mason University in Manassas, VA. This is the first conference of its kind, and I honestly didn’t know what to expect. But I’m happy to say that it was so impressive! Detectives Millan and Bacigalupi among others really put together a great thing. I met many great campus investigators, police chiefs, the president of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, and many experts in the field of terrorism, sexual assault and kinesics. My favorite breakout session was conducted by Rafi Ron, the former Director of Security at Tel Aviv Airport in Israel. He spoke about aviation security, and what we can do to thwart attacks. Awesome stuff. Read a fascinating interview with Rafi by clicking here. Overall, it was just an awesome conference and I can’t wait to go back next year. Look for tomorrows blog entry where I’ll post my interview on NBC News, who came to visit the conference.

Agents Fight Back!
Filed Under Erin Weed's Blog | Leave a Comment
Real estate agents, that is! Today I held the first Real Estate Agents Fight Back seminar at the Hoboken studio, where I taught a bunch of agents how to open up a can o’ whoop-ass. I have quite a few friends who work in the real estate industy, who constantly find themselves in situations where they are showing property alone to a stranger. It can be an opportunity for a terrible crime, just as it was recently in Texas. A young agent was stabbed 27 times by a man she was showing property to, and she died of her wounds. The agents I taught today were committed to doing what they could to proactively avoid such a fate.
All that real estate fightin’ really got me thinking…what a great improvised weapon a real estate sign that is stuck into people’s lawns would make!

Jennifer Wider

I made a new friend today. I love meeting kick ass women. Her name is Jennifer Wider M.D. and she recently had a book come out called, The Doctor’s Complete College Girls’ Health Guide. (Random House, May 2006) She uses her medical background to educate women on their health, and specifically targets the college gals. In addition, she’s got a radio show on the Cosmo channel on Sirius. Check her out on Channel 111 at 8:30 pm Tuesday nights…I know I will! Buy her book for a college gal you love…it’s easy to neglect your health at college, but it’s so important no to.

Book on Amazon
Filed Under Erin Weed's Blog | 1 Comment
So recently people have been asking me if my book is available on Amazon. Oddly enough, I wasn’t sure. Was this something the book distributor handles? Being a first time author, I find myself in a constant state of confusion, but I’m learning. Well I got curious, and fell asleep last night wondering, “IS my book on Amazon?” Alas, it is. CLICK HERE to see it.
People have been wondering if it’s better for them to buy it at a bookstore or amazon…if you buy it from www.shopGFB.com you’ll get it autographed. And Amazon is only offering pre-orders right now, as opposed to shopGFB which will ship it out today.
In addition to being on Amazon, the book is also being featured on all sorts of other random websites. Some are in foreign languages. How do you say “kick ass” in Ukranian? I’ve gotta find that out.
Thanks for the ongoing support of this book! Less than a month ’till my full on book tour, with accompanying photo/video blog of my tales from the road.

So freakin’ hot

So I got in my car today, and the digital thermometer said it was 130 degrees. Granted, the car is black, but really! That’s crazy. I thought this picture was hilarious…it’s not my pug, Zoe, but I bet she’d lay in a pile o’ ice given the chance. Hope you’re all staying cool…
