Above is a video done by bestselling author, David Meerman Scott, about his new book, World Wide Rave.  David interviewed me for his book, about some of the fun things we’ve done using cell phones during GFB seminars to promote self-defense to young women.  So what IS a world wide rave, exactly?  From the book’s website:  “A World Wide Rave is when people around the world are talking about you, your company, and your products. Whether you’re located in San Francisco, Dubai, or Reykjavík, it’s when global communities eagerly link to your stuff on the Web. It’s when online buzz drives buyers to your virtual doorstep. And it’s when tons of fans visit your Web site and your blog because they genuinely want to be there.”

We strive to create a global rave such as this with Girls Fight Back, by making our work to end violence against women accessible on the web.  We have some big plans in the coming year for sprucing up the GFB website with a ton of personal safety and self-defense info that can be accessed by anyone, anywhere in the world, for free.  We’re hoping this will continue the buzz that women are worth fighting for…and it’s time for each of us to have the skills to do so.

A big thanks to David for believing in our mission, and we wish him the best of luck with the release of his book!  You can buy it here.  Watch the video above to see a pretty hilarious cameo, by yours truly.  You can’t miss it.

Today we sent out the Girls Fight Back E-news, with some very big announcements.  I am in Virginia now, and gotta hop in the car and drive up to Pennsylvania.  Hope you enjoy all our latest developments!  Click here to read the e-news.

bassschulerI’m very excited to say that I’ve officially joined forces with an awesome booking agency called Bass/Schuler Entertainment!  Going forward, Bass/Schuler will be booking all my speaking engagements.  After weeks of phone chats to make sure this was a good fit for all, I finally got the opportunity to meet Chris Schuler (co-owner) and the incredible team of speakers and artists at the NACA Conference in Nashville this week.  (See us pictured at left) What a talented and hilarious team!  With all the new and exciting growth that’s planned for this year with Girls Fight Back, this is a pretty incredible business partnership.

FYI, Bass/Schuler has been nominated “Agency of the Year” by Campus Activities Magazine.  They deserve it, so please click here to cast your vote.

My schedule is pretty full for March, but we’re offering a discounted speaking fee for events that occur during the month of April.  As you probably know, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and probably the best possible time to bring women’s safety and empowerment to campus.  Please call Bass/Schuler at 773.481.2600 to book me to speak, or visit their website by clicking here.

***FYI, April is my farewell tour.  Come May, I won’t be traveling by air as I’ll be in the final trimester of my pregnancy.  So last chance to book me to speak ’till I’m off maternity leave in late October…

knockedup1On Sunday I made the big announcement that I’m pregnant and due in August ‘09.  It quickly became obvious the best place to notify people would be Facebook, since pretty much my entire personal and professional network lurks there.  And so it was.  I posted a picture of myself wearing a “Knocked Up” t-shirt (at left) and let that subtle little message do the work for me.  It was a little crass, but fun.  And I have to say, with all the excitement of my friends and overall network around the world, it finally got me into the spirit of this whole pregnancy thing.  See, it’s a little hard to get yourself all stoked after having a miscarriage, which happened this past summer.  It’s almost like you don’t want to let yourself get happy or excited about an idea, out of fear of it slipping away.  I think this concept stems far beyond disappointments in parenthood.  We have such high hopes for life or business or happiness, yet we try to tame these ideals to protect ourselves from the inevitable let-down.  Kinda makes you wonder how much joy we might be missing out on…

Many of you have asked what my plan is, knowing how much I travel. How does a crazy woman like me have a baby?  It’s a good question, one that I’ve been pondering myself quite a bit as of late. My speaking tour this Spring is packed as usual, and I’ll be going full-throttle until May 1st.  After that, I’m not getting on an airplane for awhile but will still speak in Colorado in Summer ‘09.  After this baby jitterbugs into the world (that’s how I’m envisioning childbirth – denial is a lovely thing) I’ll simply be unable, and probably unwilling, to travel so much.  Hence, the obvious next step…

In a few days I’ll be launching the first round of my search for several speakers to give my safety & self-defense seminars.  Come August, these speakers will be taking my place, giving all 3 of my safety & self-defense programs (Girls Fight Back, How to be a Bad Victim and Stayin’ Alive on Spring Break).  I’ll still speak after August, just not at the intensity that I do now.  Training other speakers is very long overdue, and I can’t wait to see all the awesome applicants.  Based on the interest I’ve heard thus far, our selection committee is going to have quite a difficult decision.  But I look forward to a new generation of young people spreading the message of safety.

Just a heads up for all you social entrepreneurs, marketers and world changers out there…a new book is coming, and it’s going to RAWK.  Very soon, marketing guru David Meerman Scott will be releasing a new read called World Wide Rave.  I met David through Twitter of all places, as I’m a huge fan of one of his other books called The New Rules of Marketing and PR.  He really has a way of breaking down ideas how to use marketing and PR to further your business goals, which is so critical these days.  We gotta get creative, and use all those free tools (especially on the web) to spread the word!  Today David blogged about Girls Fight Back, so a big thank you to him.  He also interviewed me about some of the quirky things we do in Girls Fight Back seminars to spread the message that fighting like a girl is actually a very good thing.  Read the blog about Girls Fight Back today on David’s blog.

For months now, I’ve been writing about my friend on a mission to end global violence named Lee Sinclair.  She founded the non-profit group, I’m Worth Defending, which is Kenya’s first women’s self-defense program.  She lives in San Francisco but is currently working in Kenya, along with another crusader named Carol Middleton.  Carol is the founder/owner of DC Krav Maga and DC Impact.  Together they are meeting with the trainers and taking their skills to the next level.  Can’t wait to join Lee in Kenya in January 2010, but in the meantime I’m loyally reading her blog.  Yesterday they visited a refugee rescue center and taught self-defense to teen girls covered head to toe in burkas.  Wow.  Read about Lee’s daily happenings by clicking here.
