About six years ago I had a friend who was always talking about “following her bliss” and making major life decisions based on subtle messages she noticed. Even though she was a good 10 years older than me, I thought she was naive to be void of a plan, and waiting for some whimsical signal to cue some major life decisions. But lately I’ve changed my tune – as I’ve been doing a lot of spiritual work, and have been paying close attention to messages from the universe. Remember that book The Celestine Prophecy? A consistent idea throughout the book is the simple fact there is deep meaning to coincidence. When a person believes this, they will likely find clues about life and their own path at an almost eerie frequency.
A few weeks ago I was thinking about business and money and the role of these things in social good work. Then one night I got lazy and didn’t plan our family dinner, so we ordered Chinese food…and wham-o! Here was my enlightenment on a platter in the form of a fortune cookie:
It’s so true, right? For all of us…in regards to life, love, health, finance or whatever else you seek. Often people need this permission or outward assurance they are “good enough” before they can live it. Now maybe this fortune was intended for someone else, and by sheer accident it landed on my plate. (Coincidence?) But I’ll take it as my intended truth, just because it happened.
Last week I got another subtle suggestion, courtesy of my local Core Power Yoga studio. I was faced with a few big decisions in my personal and professional life, and thankfully all were positive opportunities. Sometimes these are the hardest decisions, aren’t they? That day, I noticed this hanging on the wall:
I think one of the reasons people have such a hard time making both biz and life choices is because we look at them in two different categories, instead of merging them into one big choice. Unrealistic expectations of ourselves expect these two worlds to somehow mesh seamlessly, without looking at the bigger picture. The real question is,
“What do you want from your experience on this earth?”
I’m also discovering some of these messages or coincidences are more internal, than blatantly spelled out like the examples above. In fact, the same yoga class where I read the above quotation that so deeply resonated with me, I also strained my achilles tendons, putting me out of commission for the week. I had to cancel some big plans as a result of this, which totally wreaked havoc on my pride – I hate not following through. But I am choosing to look for the deeper message even there, which is maybe something like, “Quit pushing yourself so hard.” Or maybe it’s more simple than that – maybe it’s the universe saying, JUST STOP!
Happy Friday my friends…just for fun this weekend, look around at your life, your thoughts, your physical experience, those little messages that flash in front of you. What are they trying to tell you?
