This blog is dedicated to people who speak up, when it would be so much easier to shut up. Does that sound like you?
I call them the Evolution Society.
Membership is free, and most people who belong don’t even know it. It is selective, but most don’t realize who their esteemed peers are.
But it’s time to cut through the mystery. It’s time for the Evolution Society to see who they are, and who their comrades are as well. Our world will be better for it.
Now I know the name Evolution Society may sound grandiose, so let me explain the path of someone who is called as a member. Each person’s path is different, but they have two fundamental traits in common.
Connection with Self – They are committed to personal evolution. Even the hard parts most of us would rather ignore. They are always seeking and growing and never stop learning about themselves. They are connected to their own truth.
Connection with Others – They feel compelled to share what they know and believe with other people. The sharing starts small, but often grows into an audience of some kind, like speaking or writing (or a combination).
If this sounds like you, please know it can be a sneaky path. You may think you are being called to be a communicator, leader, activist or entrepreneur…but really, you are being called as a healer.
The Evolution Society heals with their words, their knowledge, their stories, their experiences, their beliefs, their seeking soul, their authenticity, their humor and their clumsy grace in making the choice to share so widely. (which is nearly always accompanied by public mis-steps along the way)
Sometimes their work is healing one-to-one, like coaching or consulting. Sometimes it’s one-to-some, like workshops or small group work. Sometimes it’s one-to-many, like a keynote, book, blog or internet course. Often it’s a combo of the three – and when done with pure intention, it’s always healing.
One might assume folks in the Evolution Society love the limelight, or really need attention. They themselves often assume this, and revert to trait #1 and go to working on themselves instead of sharing. They wonder what must have gone wrong in childhood to have such an ego that is so insistent about giving a TEDx talk, or writing a book, or whatever else they feel pulled to do in such a public way.
But it’s my job to lovingly stop them when they do this unnecessarily and call them back to their work. To give them a nudge that SHARING is part of their being. They must do this. They are called to it, even when they don’t want to. Even when it’s terrifying.
Especially then. That’s where the gold is.
The desire to speak out is so much different than having a compulsion to. People who WANT to speak without the pure intention you’ll find in the motivational speaker world, selling self-help products for $19.95 from the stage. They want and need to be seen for their own personal gain. They are often good at it, so the ones with talent do well, financially. That’s their path, and it’s taken me awhile, but I’m finally coming to a place where I can honor it as such.
But do not be confused – those people are not the Evolution Society.
The ones who are, are sometimes introverts. They are humble. They put other people first, often to a fault. They are flawed, and they know it. They talk about those flaws, and work to be better. They are deeply connected to their work. They care about people. They assume others know more than they do. They surround themselves with people smarter than themselves.
Many times, their message does not bring them financial gain, or even social popularity. Sometimes they say things that resonate deeply with audiences, and they go viral. And sometimes as they are recognized in airports, or get death threats in YouTube comments. Sometimes the message they are here to carry causes tension in relationships at home or work.
Sometimes they resent their path.
Yet they keep going, because they have no choice. They are compelled.
Evolution Society folks are often plagued by self-doubt. They question their pull to be on a stage at all. They ask questions like: “Who needs to hear me anyway? Hasn’t this already been said or done? Who am I to be the person to offer this to the world?”
In these questions are deep personal inquiry, and there is struggle. But I also hear music when people say things like this, because I know it is part of the process. In oder to truly own the belief that we are the right person to be on stage, first we must entertain the idea that we aren’t.
Those are my people. I am here for YOU.
What they offer the world is authenticity and permission. Can you imagine a world where people felt they could actually be who they are?
I can. I see it. But we need the Evolution Society to bring it to the masses. After all, they are the maximizers.
If you are feeling a certain resonance with this post, please know you’re on a very real path. You are a healer and this is all very real.
If you are curious as to what inside of you wants to be born, keep reading. If you’ve ever had the sensation you have something to say, but simultaneously can’t give justice to your voice, keep reading. If you feel a nagging compulsion to share whatever you know, keep reading. If all this creates some mix of fear, excitement, dread and joy in your gut…keep reading.
Because if you resonate with those urges and feelings, consider yourself a card carrying member of the Evolution Society.
PS. If you consider yourself a member of the Evolution Society, tell me more in the comments below. I’d love to know more about the moment you realized you’re a card carrying member. How’d it happen? Why’d it happen?
