Tattoo

April 20, 2008

bicep.jpgSo lately I have been thinking a lot about getting a tattoo of G.G. (short for Green Girl, and the Girls Fight Back logo) somewhere on my body.  I have no other tattoos, and I’ve never really been the kind of girl that’s into getting a butterfly or unicorn on my ankle just beacuse it’s cute.  If I’m going to permanently ink something onto my body, I want it to mean something.  This June marks 7 years since Shannon’s murder, and also what would have been Shannon’s 28th birthday.  So I was thinking this could be a good time to do it.  I was wondering if any of my loyal blog readers have any experience with tattoos…where to get them, where on your body are ideal spots, etc.  I’m a newbie, so school me!

I really like the wrist tattoo’s (like were your watch would fall on the inside of your arm) or the side-torso tattoo’s (2 inches under armpit on the side of the rib cage) on women. They are different then the ankle/lower back, look cute on women, and can be covered when needed! Good luck!

I did the ole tramp stamp, as my husband calls, it for my 30th birthday last year. Lower back, below the rise of the jeans. No one can see it unless I show it to them or I bend down and my pants go with me. Its a cool irish claddagh which means a lot to me.

I got one back in 2000, right after graduating from EIU. I got mine at the Jade Dragon in Chicago - it’s on Belmont. They are supposed to be well-known for being one of the cleanest tattoo parlors in the midwest. I actually designed my own, also. I also felt that if it was going to be on my body for the rest of my life it needed to mean something. Mine is of a Celtic Trinity Knot - it represents the Holy Trinity - God is hugely important in my life - and my family has Irish roots through my favorite grandfather who passed away on my 17th birthday…it’s a dual tribute tattoo. “To God and Grandpa.”

As for places, I’ve heard the places near bone are quite painful, so I opted for my lower back, but off to the side…above the booty. It’s a bit fleshier there. The outline was annoying, not really painful. My friend told me before I got it that it felt like someone scratching a compass across your skin…just at the surface. Remember those compass things we used to draw with in Geometry class back in the day? Think of the sharp metal point…but again, it’s not a sharp or stabbing pain…it’s just an annoying scratching feeling. The shading (mine has grey shading) felt like a cold ball-point pen drawing on my skin.

I guess things to think about are - can you show it off when you want to? Can you hide it when you want to? Will it stretch if you ever have children?

Thanks for all that you do…I’m a loyol reader - and I plug your organization to everyone. You do awesome work. Thank God for you!

i know that you said something about the butterfly and unicorns on the ankle, but for what you are wanting to get, the ankle might not be too bad of a place. i don’t have any tattoos, but my sister and i have been doing a lot of research on tattoos for when we actually want to get one.

i think that you are pretty rad for doing this. some think it’s a bad idea to brand yourself with ink, but some just don’t get when people do it for a reason. your reason makes perfect scence, and i think your awsome for doing so.

Girl!! I’m stoked you’re thinking about joining the ink parade! I’m not sure if you remember but I did get a small tattoo on the inside of my right foot behind & below the ankle bone. It’s a perfect place because when you wear pants and/or socks it doesn’t show but flip flops and summer shoes show it off nicely.

I also agree with the recommendations about making sure your tattoo means something to you. I enjoy explaining what my tattoo means when people ask what it is. PS - it’s a christian fish symbol with a cross in the center - symbolizing Jesus.

Nancy’s description of the process and pain factors are right on the mark!

Best of Luck and can’t wait to hear an update!!

Got something to say?
